The project revolves around two complementary initiatives:
1. Sitatunga Landscape and Climate Smart Rice CREMA Project: Focused on the Avu Lagoon region in the Volta Region of Ghana, this initiative leverages sustainable land use practices and climate-smart agriculture to promote both ecological vitality and the prosperity of local communities. Through climate-smart rice cultivation techniques, such as Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD), the project reduces greenhouse gas emissions, enhances crop resilience, and supports responsible agricultural practices. Additionally, the project emphasises the protection of the Sitatunga population, a unique species residing in the area, through the creation of habitat corridors and population monitoring.
Organizing Farmers for the Chocolate and Confectionery Industry:
An innovative aspect of the project involves organising local farmers to cultivate ingredients specifically destined for the chocolate and confectionery industry. Collaborating with YGL’s existing network of certified organic cocoa farmers, these farmers will grow other premium-quality ingredients, such as organic strawberry,peanuts, bananas,mangoes,sugarcane and plantains. This endeavour establishes a value chain that resonates with the One Health concept by ensuring sustainable agriculture, community prosperity, and ecosystem health. By cultivating ingredients that contribute to the creation of delectable and sustainable treats, the project nurtures economic opportunities for local farmers while reinforcing the notion that the well-being of people, animals, and the environment are inextricably linked.
